Broken English Films was created by Hugo Lunny in 2007 to produce independent films.

Having made his first independent film at 23 ("The Myth Of The Individual"), Hugo kept writing and decided that regardless of agents and industry red tape, he wanted to put out his own projects. Hence, the company was formed.

The name "Broken English" came from two sources, the first being the definition of the term "Broken English" which is, "Incorrect or awkwardly structured English, usually spoken or written by non-native speakers." Or the phrase's meaning being, "Imperfectly spoken, as by a foreigner." The reasoning behind that being to try to tell a story in English, but not in a straight forward sense; being expressed through the voices and actions of characters in these fictional tales.

Secondly, the name "Broken English" came from Hugo's initial financial predicament beginning the company, being Broke n' (and) English. A situation he hoped his films and entrepreneurial endeavours would get him out of.

Broken English produce independent pictures of a unique nature, they try to avoid the mainstream fluff and contain their own level of depth and reality.
