Isn’t it irritating that although we all believe that we’re unique, the truth is that we do often unknowingly share the same ideas and end up fighting over who came up with it first. Of course having copy-written documents helps, however regardless of that, arguing the point is moot.

In 2009, I came up with a script entitled “The Best Laid Plans.” A dramatic feature surrounding a break in. I’d become irked once I saw Terry Fallis’ successful book on shelves in 2010, but I knew due to the differences in content – making a film with that title wouldn’t be a problem.

However, little did I know that back in 1999 Ted Griffin wrote a feature that was produced and starred Reese Witherspoon, Ben Kent wrote and produced a short film with the same title in 2007 and Chris Green came out with another story entitled “The Best Laid Plans” this very year.

What I wonder about is how important a title is. I’ve never renamed any of my scripts, because I’m fairly pretentious towards my work. Although the title is adapted from a famous quote by John Steinbeck from “Of Mice and Men” (“The best laid schemes of mice and men / Often go awry.”), is the point any weaker if reworded? As a writer you do need to be able to let go of your work. But also, don’t you need to place a certain value on the elements you construct around it?

“Rationale” Announcement

Broken English Films is proud to announce that the movie “Rationale” has entered pre-production. Currently being showcased is it’s blog, viewable at http://www.rationalemovie.com/blog/.

Broken English Films is also in the process of raising funds. If you wish to donate to the project please click here or alternatively you can donate through Paypal below.

Rationale is a fully independently funded project. The film was written without studio support by an everyday guy who tries to pay his bills on time, the reason it was written was because he felt he had a story he wanted to tell.

Because the film is made independently, it relies wholly on the donations of film-goes, film fans and aspiring producers to get involved and donate as little as a dollar. Without the good natured help that the world’s film community can provide, Rationale may not be made as professionally as we’ve set out for it to be.

Whether you’re able to donate a dollar, or thousands, whatever the sum you can help with, we would appreciate. All you need to do is click beneath and choose whatever you feel.

Please bear in mind that we will reward accordingly depending on your donation.

For $1-$149, we will include you in the film’s ending credits amongst our other donators as an “Executive Producer” (meaning you’ve helped fund the production of the film).

For $150-$499, we will include you in the film’s ending credits on a page all to yourself in a slightly larger font, also as an “Executive Producer.”

For $500 or above, we will include your credit as an “Executive Producer” during the film’s opening credits.

The film itself is a dark and interesting drama, based on the situations of two very different lives. On the one hand, we have Steve, a lonely man who kills people for money. His life has very little to it, and he keeps himself to himself. On the other side of the spectrum, we have Richard. Richard is a university professor who, in his late 50′s has a very mundane life. His routines in his work, and his personal life are boring, but he’s content with that.

In the blink of an eye, as life regularly does, things drastically change. Richard’s wife, Elizabeth, makes a bad decision which shapes the couple’s future forever. Richard, being the intelligent man that he is, decides he doesn’t wish to endure the pain of losing Elizabeth and dealing with life after her. Combining the reality of his uninteresting daily routine, and this new living situation, Richard decides enough is enough and seeks the help of a hitman to end his days.

How Do You Become A Producer?

Very good question. Another question would be, what is a producer?

The easiest way to summarize a producer is by simply stating that an actual producer is responsible for taking a project from nothing to something. Somehow you acquire a script, you can purchase an original screenplay from us, customized to whatever you’re looking to make, or you can write your own, or collaborate with a friend… There are a great number of ways as to how to obtain a script, but you do need one. That’s where everything stems; the story.

What do you do once you have a screenplay? Well really that’s up to you. The script is like an idea, and from that as a creative person you assemble the building blocks in order to bring this tale to fruition. With a screenplay, every factor you have is alluded to or can be imagined, and it’s your responsibility with your crew (which you’re responsible to seek and work with) to create and bring the project to life.

You can seek students from local film schools, either on or offline. Or, you can (if you have the finances) contact local film unions to acquire film professionals, but you need a crew. We all believe we can create something just by ourselves, but quite often (almost solely) in movies, you need a cast (multiple people are of course preferable), and your crew – a director, a d.o.p., camera operator, boom operator etc.

Once you have your script, break it down! That’s your responsibility. Examine everything! By doing this you can come up with a budget which you also will be responsible for finding. Executive Producers and Associate Producers can be found to help you, but the break down of the script will lead you to know how much you need to spend in order to have a professional independent set.

Once you have the budget created and understood, you can then seek specific people to fill necessary positions and roles. Depending on what you can afford, they can also have assistants and help make the machine well oiled.

The locations are vital, the director and actors are vital, and it’s your responsibility to find the right people to find them for you. The producer is like an emperor, and you need your empire to function. So find a good location manager, who will in turn find their own assistants, find a casting director and a director and so on and so forth.

Producers, Executive Producers and Associate Producers wanted

Broken English Films is looking to expand online with producers, executive producers and associate producers. Are you unsure as to what all these terms mean?

Well, firstly, your run of the mill “producer” has no singular set of responsibilities. Generally the producer is the person who strings everything together. Many people argue that fact, as producers have gained notorious and exaggerated reputations, but the producer is the glue that binds the production (or show) and ultimately gets it out into the world.

The movie producer, the film producer, the television producer, whatever the title is the person who takes a script, adds on a director (sometimes the writer) and helps gather the people and finances (or financiers) to make the pre-production period, shoot and post-production work. In theory.

Their jobs are often extremely stressful and hard, having to ultimately create and then sell an original (or loosely termed “original”) piece of work. It’s very hard to specifically pinpoint what one producer does over another as depending on their staff they may have a lot more responsibility on their shoulders due to poor help, however, in essence (unless the star or director is more powerful in the industry) they’re in charge.

An “Executive Producer” in summation, provides money. Sometimes out of their own pocket, sometimes out of seeking help to get funds together. At the end of the day though, they help provide what every project needs; a budget. Of course producers do that too, but the ultimate goal of the executive producer is acquiring money.

The “Associate Producer” is essentially an assistant to the producer, helping further handle business and creative decisions. They also play a vital role in the production of a show.

Broken English Films is seeking self motivated and driven producers to help get our projects off of the ground. If interested, please contact us by filling in the form below.
